One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who
served during the third century in Rome. Emperor Claudius
II, who was of the opinion that single men made better
soldiers than those with wives and families, had barred
marriage for young men -- his potential soldiers. Valentine
defied the decree of Claudius as he realized it was
unjust. He continued to perform marriages for young
lovers in secret. Claudius ordered that Valentine should
be put to death as Valentine's actions were discovered
by Claudius.
Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been
killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh
Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

One more story suggests that the first Valentine greeting
was sent by St. Valentine himself. The story also suggests
that while in prison, Valentine may have fallen in love
with a young girl, supposedly who was the jailor's daughter.
The young girl visited him during his confinement and
before his death, allegedly he wrote a letter to her,
signed as "From your Valentine".
The legendary Valentine was portrayed as a sympathetic
hero and a romantic figure. He was one of the most popular
saints in England and France for youngsters.
Even though the stories behind this legendary saint
are murky, some believe that Valentine's day
is celebrated in February to observe the death or burial
anniversary of Valentine. Others believe that the Christian
church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's fete
in the middle of February in an effort to Christianize
celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. February
used to be the official beginning of spring in ancient
Rome, this was also considered the time for purification
and hence houses were cleansed ritually. Houses were
sprinkled with salt and spelt wheat throughout. February
15 was when Lupercalia the fertility festival dedicated
to Faunus (the roman god of agriculture) began.

Even though the myth suggests that Valentine was killed
or buried in 270AD, Valentine's day
celebrations began to gain popularity in the 17th century
in the Great Britain. By the end of 18th century, young
lovers and friends started to exchange hand written
notes and greeting cards on this day.
Valentine's day is only second to Christmas in terms
of number of greeting cards exchanged on that day. Approximately
a billion of cards are exchanged on this day as per
the Greeting Card Association.
